Observation Narrative
Plot location: Floodplain on S side of the James River, ca. 0.2 miles W of Rt. 45 bridge at Cartersville.
This plot contains an Acer saccharinum and Acer negundo-dominated forest typical of large floodplains along the James River in central Virginia. Sandy alluvial soils are fertile but support relatively few species per 400 sq. m.. plot. Asimina triloba and Lindera benzoin are prevalent shrubs, while Elymus virginicus dominates the seasonal aspect of the herb layer. Later in the year, Laportea canadensis and Impatiens pallida will have the highest herb cover. The fertile, alluvial soils and frequent flooding disturbances tend to favor the rampant spread of exotics such as Glechoma hederacea and Alliaria petiolata.
